This week is all about makeup! My last makeup post  got such good feedback that I figured I’d share some money saving makeup secrets with everyone.

If you know me, then you know it’s no secret that I LOVE saving money. Yes, I absolutely, one-hundred and fifty percent have a bit of a shopping problem, but to be clear I ALWAYS bargain hunt. I rarely pay full-price for items and that’s the way I like to keep it. Recently, I had to restock my makeup collection since some of the products were old and I needed a new look. However, for me, and I’m assuming many ladies (and even gentlemen) alike, we have the same problem: a small budget.

To be clear, I work on a freelance writer, blogger, and non-JLaw actress’ salary, which at times can be quite small, especially in the winter months. So, without spending a small fortunate I did some research on products and was able to stock myself up pretty nicely. I haven’t picked out all my summer makeup yet but I’m confident I’ll find some awesome steals.

Last year, for Christmas, I was gifted with an Urban Decay Naked palette which was my holy grail at the time. Now, I’m not so sure. It’s not that I dislike it I’m just not in love with it. For $60 just for eyeshadow, I should be loving it. However, I found that it was just a little above average than my Smashbox mini sampler set (which was kind of awesome for $16) and just a little better than my $6 eyeshadow palette from Maybelline. This year I decided to try out some cheaper items which made all the difference. So here goes:

I found a BOGO half off sale of NYX products at ULTA which my wallet GREATLY appreciated. I’d bought concealer and bronzer from Sephora which retailed at a whopping $45 and I just didn’t love the way they made my face look. My skin is naturally oily and sometimes dry in certain areas and the products made my face look like it was flaky. So I returned the products to Sephora (who has a better return policy than ULTA – in typical fashion I lost the receipt and they were able to locate it on my points card and return the money the way I originally paid) and went to ULTA to get NYX concealer and bronzer for a total of $13 with a coupon. A long way from $45 at Sephora.

Then, I decided I needed some new lip colors so while at ULTA I figured I’d try NYX Mat lipstick in Summer Breeze and a newer brand, Revolution, in You Took My Love. Both colors were $5 each and they’re absolutely gorgeous and they last pretty much as long as MAC does (who btw I’m a HUGE fan of).

Since I’m super savvy, I signed up for a Sephora points card and got a FREE mini Tarte blush and lip kit which I’m so in love with. Side-note, if your birthday is coming up I highly recommend doing the same. So worth it. I absolutely want to buy more of their products in the future.

It also just happened to be my lucky week. I went to Victoria Secret and they were giving FREE lip glosses to anyone who tried something on at the store that day. I realize this doesn’t happen everyday – ya know the whole you get a lip gloss and you get a lip gloss – BUT if you keep checking the stores that you shop at you might just find super cool deals like I did.

Moving on to the other free stuff, so with a LOT of going back and forth I decided I should try out the Too Faced Sweet Peach eyeshadow palette. I realize this is an expensive item but 1. I saved gift cards from my birthday – remember saving money = being savvy and 2. as an added bonus if you purchase through Sephora you get to pick three free samples in addition to a free sample when you use a coupon code. So, if you’re bad at math that’s $49 for the palette, three free samples which I chose to include a mini mascara, hair conditioner, and face primer, and when I use their coupon code which I received in an email, I’m able to choose from a bunch of cool free things like Bobbi Brown mini lipstick or BareMinerals concealer powder.

So, for $49 I’m getting a new eyeshadow palette, mascara that I needed, a new mini lipstick, face primer, and a mini hair mask. And technically it’s all free. So, yeah, I think that’s a good deal that will keeper me stocked for a while.

Just an FYI, you don’t have to buy an expensive palette to get those samples for free, Sephora allows you to pick three free samples with any purchase, so if you buy a lip gloss one day and then buy face wash another day, you can still receive more free stuff. Who doesn’t love free things?

So, there you have it. You can restock your makeup kit just by searching for sales, coupons, and waiting for the right moment. Just like everything else in life, shopping is best done when planned ahead so you can utilize maximum benefits aka get more free stuff.

Let me know below if you have any savvy ways of reducing makeup costs! I’d love to hear them.

  1. Love this Jenn!! It’s definitely worth shopping around and seeing what other items may be included in your sale or if the product you want is part of a promo. I know when I shop with Clinique, I always wait for them to have their free goodies bag, that way I’m getting so much more value and get to try new products I may not have necessarily forked out the money for originally.

  2. This is giving me the shopping bug! Sephora and Ulta are amazing 😍 Especially the perks at Sephora. I love that you can get a small sample of most items at Sephora. I hate returning things because I feel bad wasting a full sized item (just because I don’t love it doesn’t mean no one would!) so instead I ask for the sample to make sure I love something before I spend my money on it. Great post!

  3. Wow!! Some of these brands and products sound amazing!! I am still such a rookie when it comes to makeup (i’m a ‘set & forget’ kind of gal. As I get older, I’m starting to care more about what I use and I’ve now got a foundation that I love (good colour/coverage/feel) which for me is a great start 🙂

  4. I absolutely love the tactic of going one day to buy X, the next to get Y, and doubling your samples that way! Totally my way of thinking!

  5. Jenn – Love the post and your thrift! I tend to splash way too much cash on makeup and I am hardly a glamor girl. I will think of your tips next time I am at the Ulta Brow Bar before I drop another fist full of $$$ and try some less expensive alternatives! Melissa xx
